We sometimes fool ourselves into believing that the Devil is nothing more than a mean kitty that can merely scratch if anything. The Bible paints him as a very LARGE kitty... one of the largest... a lion and he is seeking to devour. Take the Devil seriously. Be alert!

"Self-controlled and alert" I have taken to mean as being still, in the moment, resting in the lord. I am not being pulled or worried about the past of the future. I am taking no thought for my life, what I may eat or drink, knowing God is my abundant supply. My delight is in the lord.
This is being fully conscious, sane. The original Latin meaning of "sane" is wholeness. If I am whole I am at rest about worldly things. Satan has nothing to offer.
And as a child of God, Satan no longer has power over me.
Self-controlled is not my will keeping me in line, holding my emotions and desires in check, a sentry on watch for trouble. I do not muster my will for self-control but open my heart to Christ.
Joy is my watchtower.

God is the True North, the compass that directs our lives and keep us on track, lifts us up when we falter. We are nothing without Him and incapable of self-sustenance. Many times we try really hard to make it out ourselves but it leads only to disappointments and failures. I wish everyone would get the chance to know the Lord from birth and never part from Him for any reason. I'm praying about this tonight.

This tells me just because I may have many thoughts, I don't have to
share them, I won't explode! It is wiser at times to be silent.
This reminds me of something:
I was cooking dinner one day, and my Husband was watching t.v.
In the past I have questioned him about some of the shows he watches...
He said he sees nothing wrong with them...
We would sometimes get into an argument about them...
Well on this day, instead of opening my mouth about the show,
I decided to stop and just pray instead...
In just a couple of minutes I noticed he turned off the t.v.!!!!!
I asked him why he turned it off? He said everything started to look boring! (Praise the LORD!)
